All-Time Favorite Bands/Artists
Here’s the opposite of the previous post I did.
Nirvana
It pretty much all started for me with Nirvana. I was in the second or third grade and “Come As You Are” came on the radio while I was in the car with my dad. The feeling I got when I heard that song was indescribable. It was like the song was having sex with me. I was damn-near creaming my pants, desperately asking my dad what this music was and he told me it was Nirvana.
My first Nirvana album was the self-titled compilation album, which my parents were uneasy about letting me buy, mainly due to the track titled “Rape Me”. I memorized every song I could, and my grandparents bought me the six disc Nirvana box set for Christmas, full of songs recorded in some basement in Seattle. I read a lot about Kurt Cobain and it was Kurt Cobain’s diary that made me start writing about my own feelings, which eventually led to this very blog you’re reading today.
In the seventh grade, we had to do a paper about who the most influential person in our life was and I wrote mine about Kurt Cobain. My parents could not have been more unhappy. Nirvana led me to discover alternative music, which pretty much led me to every band I’ve ever listened to up until this day.
Brand New
Brand New was a band that I just happened to find at the right time in my life. I was at a phase where every word spoken by Jesse Lacey felt like it was either being said directly to me or being ripped straight from my brain. I loved Brand New. I love them so much that I got their words tattooed on my body forever. They changed my life, and more likely than not, saved it.
Beastie Boys
I found an album called License to Ill in my dad’s collection that intrigued me. It would be this monumental album that would lead me to the great genre known as hip-hop. Everything about that album was perfect, and the Beastie Boys remain one of my favorite groups today, and the main reason I like hip-hop.
